Ahhhhh. The infamous 90s slump. Almost every big thrash metal band of the 80s had it. Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and now Kreator. All of them fell prey to this. Renewal has the misfortune to be the first album in Kreator’s 90s slump until they got their act together in the early 21st century. Kreator on this album is.

Renewal was the album that saw German thrash metal kings Kreator attempt to broaden their sound, relinquishing much of their legendary velocity in order to enter previously undreamed of industrial realms.

Between Kreator had released no less than seven albums & EPs and had established themselves as one of the premiere thrash bands; but by the early 90s they were understandably ready for a change. Hence, 's RENEWAL. RENEWAL adds industrial elements and a more straight-foward riffing style (i.e. less thrashy)/5(32).

As this is Kreator's first "alternative" metal album, it isn't their best, and not their worst. I can't say this album is a complete throwaway. "Winter Martyrium," "Zero to None" and "Europe After the Rain" are actually pretty good. The other six tracks, one of which is a short, weird instrumental ("Realitaskrontrolle"), are just a headache.
